Rental opportunities on the border of Tallinn
Several municipalities and settlements near Tallinn have grown together with the capital, and where access to the city is, in some places, no worse than from the city districts themselves. There are decent driving and light traffic roads, and public transport works. If you are ready to spend a little more time getting to the city center, you can find a more affordable rental home and also a calmer and greener living environment in these places.
11 kilometers to the east of the center of Tallinn is the center of Viimsi parish with the sea border, where you can find both older and newer apartment buildings. Still, there are also new private houses built in the last century. The area around Viimsi is generally considered a solid area with a very good living environment. Therefore the distance from Tallinn has a small effect on rent prices there - apartments are 500 - 1000 euros, and there are few rental offers.
Sixteen kilometers to the east of Tallinn is Maardu, with 16,000 inhabitants, slowly removing the image of an industrial city. You can find affordable rental offers in Maardu from 250 euros. As a resident, you must consider the living environment of an industrial city. The public transport connection to the center of Tallinn is relatively dense and fast.
On the southern border of the capital, you can find the town of Peetri in Rae municipality, which has grown rapidly in recent years thanks to the construction of new residential buildings and offers a modern living environment. Therefore, many young families live here. In terms of location, the town of Peetri is even closer to the center of Tallinn than many districts. You can reach the center in a quarter of an hour by car and a half by public transport. The airport, railway station, Ülemiste center - one of Estonia's largest shopping centers and innovative business district Ülemiste City - are even closer. The area is in demand among tenants, and rents range from 500 - 1200 euros.
South of Tallinn is the small town of Saku, with nearly 5,000 inhabitants, which is known as the capital of beer culture because of the Saku brewery. The peaceful and green town has a good train and bus connection with the center of Tallinn - the journey takes about 40 minutes. There are always a few rental offers in Saku; rental prices are 400 - 700 euros.
The town of Saue is 4-5 kilometers southwest of Tallinn. The housing fund, rental offers, and prices are similar to Saku described above, but getting to the center of Tallinn by public transport is a bit more complicated.
To the west of Tallinn, you can find the villages of Harku and Tabasalu. Both areas have been under the attention of developers in recent years, and rows of new residential areas have been built there, and light traffic roads have been built. Transport connections and availability of services are good. Both are located away from the big city noise, offering good sports opportunities and leisure time in nature. Rental spaces are in demand; the price level depending on the condition of the building, is 450 - 800 euros.
It is also worth keeping in mind that the regions listed in this chapter are self-governing units and cooperate with Tallinn, for example, in terms of public transport. Still, they also have some differences in the organization of life compared to the capital.
